Families come in all shapes and sizes, but healthy families share similar characteristics or qualities. These characteristics include effective communication patterns, respect for all family members, and appropriate familial roles and boundaries. It is very easy for any one of these characteristics to deteriorate when a family is dealing with pressures from daily life or a stressful event. When the family is unable to cope with one of these pressures effectively, the family as a whole becomes stressed and difficulties arise, creating an unhealthy dynamic.
In family therapy, we listen to each family member to better understand what initially brought your family to seek support. Next we focus on improving communication so that each family member feels supported and valued. Once communication becomes more effective, additional concerns and issues can be better addressed with the ultimate goal being to restore, or create, a healthy balance for your family.
