Couples Therapy:

Angry Couple

Being a part of a couple provides a closeness that does not exist in our typical friendships and family units.  This unique union combines friendship and intimacy in a dynamic manner that can often be very rewarding.  It can also be challenging.  It is often difficult to balance the needs of the individuals with the needs of the couple.  We all have a basic need to be heard and understood.  When this need is not being met, the result can lead to tension and frustration within the relationship.  As tensions and frustrations mount, many couples find themselves in a constant cycle of struggling with the same relational problems month after month, year after year.  This recurring pattern of negative interactions can lead to ineffective communication, resentment, emotional and physical withdrawal, and in some cases, cause the relationship to end completely.

Seeking help from a neutral party to improve your relationship shows that your relationship is valuable to both you and your partner.  Couples therapy is for any two people, including same-sex couples, regardless of marital status who want to improve their relationship.  In couples therapy, the role of the therapist is not to make recommendations regarding the future of your relationship.  Rather, our goal is to provide you with the tools you need to improve your communication skills so that you can work more effectively toward shared goals.
