Therapy for Children and Adolescents:

Depressed Teenage Girl As caregivers, we want only the best for our children.  We want them to have a positive sense of self-worth and the confidence to embrace and learn from their experiences.  It can be difficult to think of your child as needing additional support outside of the home.  The reality is that social, familial, and academic pressures can become burdensome and lead to challenges for children and adolescents.  Just like adults, children and adolescents can experience a variety of challenging issues and emotions.  However, they are often more limited in their ability to effectively express and appropriately react to these emotions.

Seeking assistance from a trained professional can be extremely beneficial to your child’s well-being.  We create a safe, trusting environment where children and adolescents are encouraged to express themselves freely.  The goal is to help him/her increase self-esteem and confidence, learn effective problem solving techniques, and improve communication skills that benefit the entire family.

Common issues for child and adolescent therapy include:

  • Social Skills Training
  • ADHD
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Oppositional/Defiant Behavior
  • Self Harming Behavior
  • Low Self-Esteem
  • Adjustment to significant changes including loss of loved ones, divorce, blended families, new siblings, and other significant events
  • Bullying
Comforting Mother

We each work with children aged 4 and above.  Many young children do not have the verbal skills to communicate their needs to others.  Through the use of games, art, and other interventions, we are able to help children identify and express their emotions more effectively.  We work with children individually, however, in almost all cases, caregiver involvement is needed and in some cases, family therapy may be recommended.

Adolescence can be a very daunting stage of development for both the teenager and the caregiver(s).  Therapy with teens often relies less on caregiver involvement during sessions, but still requires significant caregiver involvement at home to support the goals your teen is striving toward.
